Balance Your Life by Balancing Your Goals
Goals, at best, are a milestone of our own growth and development.  They set a destination point and give some direction to our journey.   At worst, we can use goals "against ourselves" as a reflection of our value and self esteem, or as external symbols of what we feel must "have" in our life to be happy and fulfilled.

Goal setting can help a you get clear on what you want and how to create it.   They give some structure and focus to your "development" and a means to measure your growth.

This is a great tool to get a snapshot of what your entire life looks like and where you are at in your path of development. The wheel reveals a persons priorities, strengths and weaknesses.  By looking at our own "wheel" we become aware of how balanced we are and what areas of our life we may want to focus on next.

Wheel Of Life

*We CREATE MORE from a place of balance, than imbalance.  Success is usually sustainable only from a place of balance.  By creating more balance in our lives we feel more fulfilled, enjoy the process of achieving our goals, and can often create more momentum and consistency in our lives than if we are out of balance.

After You have completed your Wheel of Life
Create 10 Goals For 90 Days

  • List 10 goals you would like to achieve in the next 90 days.
  • Keep these goals simple and specific, and to include some personal and business goals.
  • Are these goals what you really want, or do you feel you "should" accomplish these?
  • Wants - what a consultant REALLY wants, based on WHO they are, their values, passions, purpose, individual definition of success. These goals are more effortless, take little energy to pursue.

Shoulds - Based on somebody else's definition of success (passed down from parents, teachers, society, church, etc), may not truly work for that person.  These goals are often based on needs, trying to overcome something, prove self, run by past incompletions, often living their life for somebody else instead of following their own heart. These goals are effortful, take a lot of energy to pursue.

If you or your consultant is going after too many "shoulds" you may find stalling out on goals, getting frustrated, not taking action, getting down on themselves, feeling very impatient etc.

    Be - Do - Have
Many people set "having" goals - really the end result that they want to create.

EX.  I want to have X amount of money in the bank.
I want to sign up X number of new business builders.
I want to lose 10 lbs in the next 3 months.

OR - people tend to set "doing" goals - based on the actions they will take to create the result.

EX.  I want to work out 3 times each week.
I want to talk to 10 new prospects each week.
I want to make 50 phone calls a day.

We often focus on what we need to DO in order to HAVE what we want, so that... we get to BE or FEEL good.

Where's the catch?  We don't get to "Be" of "feel good" right away. Most of us end up running around, doing a lot to try and create some end result so that we get to feel good at some point down the road.  We end up "doing" so much that we are feeling or "being" tired, burnt out and cranky and can have a tough time even creating the result we are after.

*Key point - We create more from how we are "being" or "feeling" than even what we are doing.

What if you switched the order, from Do - Have - Be to Be - Do - Have?

How about setting some "being" goals?  Deciding how you want to feel and be on a daily basis so that you "do" things more effectively and enjoy the process more?

Examples of being goals may be:

  • Be happy
  • Be effective
  • Be outgoing
  • Be direct and gutsy
  • Be focused
  • Be confident

  • How do you want to be or "feel" in your life?
How can you "be" that will make it easier to take action and obtain your goals?

    Keys to Effective Goal Setting

Goals work well when they are:
  • Realistic and specific, appropriate for where a person is at in their development
  • Based on what your client wants, not what they "should" be doing
  • Based on all areas of a client's life, not just their business or financial
  • Are fun and easy to achieve, as well as some more challenging ones
  • Based on "being" goals, as well as doing and having goals

  • Homework

    1.  Work on or revise your own Wheel of Life - what do you notice?
What areas can you focus on to bring your own wheel/life more into balance?

    2. Set 10 of your own goals for next 90 days, please send them to your upline/manager when you
        are complete.

    3.  Be aware of your "shoulds" - do you really want these goals, or do you feel you should want them?
How can you add some fun, frivolous and easy goals to your list?

    4.  Pick one or two goals, and start taking action on them this week.

    5.  Create one "Being" goal for the next month - how would you like to feel or "be" on a daily basis?
What steps can you take to create that?
