CONSUMER ALERT October 19, 2001 New Child-Resistant Packaging Requirements To Take Effect By Diann Sytek (WNEM 5)
We all have them around the home, products like baby oil, suntan lotion and motor oil. Today, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted unanimously to require caps on most common oily household items. Charles and Teresa Bryson pushed for new regulations because of the tragedy that struck the family. Their son Jaden got his hands on baby oil and drank some of it. The Bryson's aren't sure how much, but it was enough to put Jaden in the hospital. Twenty-Eight days later he died from chemical pneumonia. He's not alone! According to Ann Brown from the Consumer Product Safety Commission Hydrocarbons are terrifically dangerous products in the home. Anything that contains hydrocarbons that children can ingest and aspirate in the lungs. There have been five deaths, many hospital emergency room injuries. Baby oil is just one example of a hydrocarbon. Others found in the home are, suntan oil, eye makeup remover and gasoline additives. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is now mandating all of those products and others classified as hydrocarbons come with child resistant caps. The caps we all have come to expect from over-the-counter drugs. "Child resistant caps are enormously effective to keep children under five away from household chemicals and poisons and anything with any cosmetics that could be dangerous to children" Says Brown. The Bryson's say finally something is being done. Teresa says, "We can't have our son back but if other people are aware, other parents, let them know it's dangerous to have it in a locked cabinet. Put the caps on it. I'll feel real good about that." The new packaging requirements take effect in about a year.
