From Napoleon Hill's Think And Grow Rich

1.  DESIRE - Wanting some thing so badly you will accept nothing less.   With the power of desire you can accomplish anything.  Desire with an obsession and plan definite ways to accomplish your goals.

Answer the following questions:

  • Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire and write it  down.
  • Determine what you are willing to give for the money you desire.  (There is still no such reality as something for nothing.)
  • Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you  desire.
  • Create a definite plan for achieving your desired result and begin at once whether you are ready or not to put this plan into action.
  •  Write out a clear statement of each step 1-4.
  • Read you written statement aloud once before you retire at night and once when you rise in the morning.  As you read, you must see and feel  yourself either in the position you desire, with the money, or both.

  • These steps are not just good for money, but for the attainment of any definite goal.  Remember the accumulation of money or any worthwhile goal cannot be left to chance or luck.  Almost every great leader from the dawn of civilization has been able to see a vision.  It takes desire, planning, an open mind and courage to reach a goal.

    2.  FAITH - For a richer and fuller life you must have faith.  Faith is a state of mind.  Pass on to your subconscious mind your desire.  Your faith and belief will be your reality.  If you can see yourself achieving, you will.  If you can’t see it, it will not happen.  Faith is the force when mixed with prayer that gives direct communication with the higher power.  To build your faith:  Write out a statement of your major purpose in life or your goals.  Repeat them aloud day by day until they penetrate your  subconscious mind.  Say your goal and follow it with this phrase:  I demand of myself persistence and continuous action towards its attainment.

    3.  SELF-SUGGESTION - The method of feeding positive thoughts into your subconscious mind.
Read aloud twice daily your desire.  Feed this directly to your subconscious mind.  It does not do any good to just say the words.  You must mix them with emotion.  IT TAKES TURNING YOUR DESIRE INTO A BURNING OBSESSION AND VISUALIZING YOUR SUCCESS. *Both poverty and riches are the offspring of thought.

    4.  SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE - There are two kinds of knowledge - General and Specialized.  General is of little use in attaining money - it must be organized and intelligently directed through practical plans of action to a definite goal in order to accumulate money.  Knowledge is only potential power.  It becomes power when it is organized and put to a definite plan.

  • successful people never stop acquiring Special Knowledge related to their major purpose, business or profession.
  • 5.  IMAGINATION - To combine Specialized Knowledge with ideas in the form of organized plans.
Get in touch with your creative imagination - inspiration and hunches will lead you there.  Creative imagination works automatically only when the subconscious mind is stimulated by a strong desire. This source provides new ideas.  The more you use your creative imagination the more effective and productive it becomes.  Many great leaders, poets, musicians, and writers became successful from using their creative imagination.  Using your imagination takes determination.

    6.  ORGANIZED PLANNING - Definite, practical plans are necessary to turn your desires into great riches.  Surround yourself with people who can help you formulate and carry out your plans.  You must have the advantage of the minds of others.  Remember:  No man is an island.  This group isyour master mind group.  This is also where you develop your leadership ability.

    Leadership Skills:

  • Unwavering Courage - you must be brave enough to carry out your plans.  Sometimes in the face of skepticism and discouragement.
  • Self - Control.
  • A strong sense of justice and the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Assume responsibility.
  • Be decisive.
  • Develop the habit of doing more than you are paid for.
  • You must have a pleasing personality.
  • Real leaders are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
  • You must be able to organize and determine what you must do and what can be delegated.
  • Reasons for failure:
  • Lack of self-discipline.
  • Selfishness.
  • Lack of persistence.
  • Procrastination.
  • Lack of capital (reserves to absorb the shock of your mistakes).
  • Trying to get without giving.
  • 7.  DECISION - Promptly - having a definite goal makes reaching decisions easy.  Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth closed.  This is the way to accumulate knowledge.  Leaders decide quickly and firmly.  That is the major reason they are leaders.  The world has a habit of making room  for the epeole whose words and actions show they know where they are going.

    8.  PERSISTENCE - All 13 of these principles must be applied with persistence. Persistence is a state of mind, so it can be cultivated.  Persistence is the courage to Keep on Keeping On. Keys in cultivating persistence:

  • Definite purpose backed by burning desire for its purpose.
  • A definite plan expressed in continuous action.
  • A mind closed tightly against all negative or discouraging influences  including: negative suggestions from relatives and friends.
  • A friendly alliance with one or more people who will encourage you to  follow through with your plan.
  • These 4 steps are essential for success in all walks of life.  These steps control your economic destiny. They lead to freedom of independence of thought,  they guarantee favorable breaks, they convert dreams into reality, they lead to the mastery of fear, discouragement and indifference.  They lead to  riches.  Get the full significance of these statements and you will understand the importance of persistence.  Without persistence you will be defeated before you even start.  With persistence you will win.

    9.  POWER - is required for the accumulation of success.  Power may be defined as organized and intelligently directed knowledge.  Plans are useless without sufficient power to translate them into action.  Organized effort or power is produced when two or more people get together to work in a spirit of harmony towards a definite end.  Power is created when you and your mastermind group (as these helpful people are called)  convert your knowledge and experience into definite plan and express those plans into action.  Create power by organizing and directing a mastermind group of people who possess knowledge you require in your journey to success.

    10.  CHANNELING YOUR PSYCHIC AND EMOTIONAL ENERGY - This is directly connected with your drive to succeed.  You need to develop outlets for your psychic and emotional energy through forms of expression that enrich the body, mind and spirit.  For you to succeed and draw on your energy and enthusiasm, your relationships with others must be respectful and considerate.  Or to put it simply, your attitude toward others must be based on love.  Channel your love in positive ways through  family, marriage, charitable organizations or helping people that cannot help themselves.

    11.  USE OF THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND - The subconscious mind works both day and night.  You cannot entirely control it.  You can hand over to it any plans, desires or purpose that you wish transformed into concrete form.  The subconscious mind is a power link between the human mind and the infinite power of the highter power.  It is the basis through which prayer may be transmitted to  the source capable of answering prayer.  The possibilities of creative effort connected with the subconscious mind are unlimited.  Hold in your mind as often as possible a clear picture of yourself  enjoying your accomplished goal.  Your subconscious mind works continuously and it is open for all kinds of suggestions and ideas, negative as well as positive.  Block negative thoughts out of your  mind and fill your mind with positive, confident thoughts about yourself, your goals and your capability of turning your desires into reality.

    12.  USING YOUR BRAIN - It is far more miraculous than any of today’s most sophisticated computers.  your brain is a powerhouse.  The only sad thing about the brain is that we under utilize it.  Psychologists tell us that the average person uses only 10% of their potential brain power.

  • Decide today to begin using your God-given brain.  Stretch it, challenge it, work it, give it the  goals you wish to accomplish and watch your dreams come true.

  • 13.  THE SIXTH SENSE - Before you can experience your Sixth Sense with regard to success, you must first master the other 12 principles.  Otherwise you will have nothing to compare the Sixth Sense with.  It recognizes the deep yearning within people to become all that they can be by using all their  inner sources and abilities.  The Sixth Sense recognizes the drive in the human spirit toward  spontaneous expressiveness, towards full individuality and towards becoming fully functioning with a sense of purpose and aliveness.

  • When the previous 12 principles are interacted with your Sixth Sense they create an energetic momentum that results in maximum performance.

  • Read these principles again and again.  Practice the principles relentlessly.  Cut yourself away from the average and the mediocre.  Overcome self-doubt and self-sabotage.  Remove the mental blocks that hold you back from succeeding and becoming all that you can be.

*These principle hold the key to success and a richer and fuller life.
